FAMU Law Announces Fall 2022 Lineup of Award Winning Legal Connections

Featuring segments on the 20th anniversary celebration, a special trip to West Africa & a closer look

at the controversial child death sentence of George Stinney, Jr.

 

ORLANDO, Fla – Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law announces its fall 2022 lineup for Legal Connections.

Legal Connections features the following segments:

  • FAMU Law Professor LeRoy Pernell takes a closer look at the controversial George Stinney, Jr. death penalty case. The 14-year-old was wrongly convicted and executed in South Carolina before being exonerated decades later.
  • FAMU Law Professor Dr. Jeremy Levitt talks about an important trip to West Africa that impacted the lives of local youngsters who made the journey. The trip to West Africa was sponsored by the Stono Institute of which Dr. Levitt is the founder and president.
  • William Gary discusses the lives of civil rights workers Harry T. and Harriet V. Moore who were victims of a fatal bombing of their Brevard County home. The Moore’s have a Cultural Center and Museum to honor them and their contributions to civil rights in Florida.
  • FAMU Law Professor Jennifer Smith and Dr. Eric Boyd talk about Fairways to Leadership and how the golf program helps law students with networking and leadership skills.
  • FAMU Law Donor Relations Officer Reginald Mitchell, Sr. provides an overview of the law school’s 20th anniversary celebration.
  • FAMU reporter Javonni Hampton covers a special plaque unveiling in Tallahassee to honor the original 57 College of Law graduates. Former state Senator Arthenia Joyner and John Due, Jr. attended the program. Both are original law school alums.
  • FAMU Law student Amari Roberts talks about her LexisNexis Fellowship. Her project involves efforts to eliminate the death penalty in the state of Georgia.
  • Third-year student Derrick Gaiter talks about the Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship.

Legal Connections won a silver Telly Award in 2021 for coverage of the Ocoee Massacre.
