Orlando, Fla. – The Fifth District Court of Appeal held a special session in the Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law Ceremonial Moot Courtroom on March 19, 2013. With Honorable Judge C. Alan Lawson presiding, the Court heard oral arguments in three cases and participated in a question-and-answer session with FAMU Law students and visitors. Joining Judge Lawson were Honorable Judges Bruce W. Jacobus and Wendy W. Berger. The annual Law Day event marks the seventh consecutive year the Court has held a special session at FAMU.

"It is always a privilege to have members of the judiciary visit with our students," said Dean LeRoy Pernell, who welcomed the Court at the start of the special session. "The support shown by the Fifth DCA annually affords our students a benefit that goes beyond the theory of the appeals process."

The Court heard oral arguments in Russell Harris Calamia v. State of Florida; Lorene Elbert v. Liberty Title and Escrow Company; and The Langley Limited Partnership, LLP v. School Board of Lake County, Florida.

First-year College of Law students in attendance were provided with insight that could carry-over into their first-year oral arguments slated to begin in late March. Many students directed questions to both the bench and the attorneys representing the parties. Questions ranged from the various stages of the appeals process, to preparation techniques and strategies for presenting quality arguments.

Following the session, the judges were honored guests at a lunch reception with FAMU Law students and faculty advisors in the College of Law Moot Court program. The judges shared their experiences in the judiciary, while students discussed their aspirations beyond law school.
