2012 Environmental Law and Justice Symposium

What: “Climate Change and Global Food Security” -the third annual Florida A&M University (FAMU) Environmental Law and Justice Symposium, co-sponsored by Florida A&M University’s Environment, Development & Justice Program in the Center for International Law and Justice at the College of Law, and the Center for Environmental Equity and Justice at the School of the Environment.  The event is presented in partnership with Southeastern Green Network and Tallahassee Food Network.

When: Thursday, November 1, 2012 - Registration begins at 8 a.m.; Friday, November 2, 2012 - Registration begins at 8 a.m.; Saturday, November 3, 2012 - Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m.

Where: Thursday - FAMU Band Rehersal Hall - Foster-Tanner Music Building; Friday - Perry Paige Auditorium - 1740 S Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Tallahassee, FL, 32301; Saturday - Watson Temple - 665 West Brevard Street  Tallahassee, FL 32304.

Who: The symposium will feature the following speakers and notable panelists:

• Claudio Lutzky, Professor and Director, Program on Climate Change Law University of Buenos Aires School of Law - Friday Opening Keynote;
• Mark Winne, Food Security Coalition – Friday Lunch Keynote Presentation;
• Cinnamon Carlane, Professor, The Ohio State University College of Law
• Shi-Ling Hsu, Professor, Florida State University College of Law
• Miaisha Mitchell, Tallahasse Food Network

Why: The three-day symposium features forty current and future leaders from environmental, agricultural, public policy and community development arenas from around the world presenting and conducting four keynote addresses; two lectures; seven panel discussions and a student poster competition on issues relative to “Climate Change and Global Food Security.”

Scheduled presentations will include: Challenges of Feeding Future Generations; Climate Change, Food Production, and Sustainability; Regulatory Tools to Combat the Climate Change Crisis; Global Food Access; Workforce Issues: Immigration and Local Food Access; the Farm Bill: What Is the Real Deal and What Is Next?; Climate Change Impacts on Food Security in the Arctic; and 1,000 Gardens in Africa Initiative. 

Registration is required and free of charge for the general public. The cost with meals is $40 for the general public;  $90 for general attendees seeking CLE credits; $75 for FAMU alumni and members of the Environmental and Land Use Law Section (ELULS) of the Florida Bar seeking CLE credits; $20 for non-FAMU students. The non-CLE and non-meals general public may also attend at no charge. FAMU students, faculty and staff may attend with meals at no charge, but must register with a valid Rattler ID. ‘Sustainable U’ Poster Competition

Call for Entries:  The ‘Sustainable U’ Poster Competition will visually express ideas that address categories of alternative climate change and global food security concerns.  Participants may choose from the following categories:  Building a Green Campus Community; Greening the Curriculum; Sustainable Organizational Leadership; Constituent Advocacy; Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Techniques; and Health, Environmental, and Socioeconomic Disparities.  Poster Registration Deadline: October 15, 2012; Poster Submission Deadline: October 26, 2012
